Fall Musical

Thank you to everyone who auditioned. For those of you who did not make the cast, PLEASE continue to work on your singing, acting and dancing and join us next year. Our winter show, Our Town and our spring show Once in a Lifetime will also have large casts and we invite you to come out for those shows as well. Finally, please consider participating in our crew for The Little Mermaid. Our crew meeting is Friday, September 16th at 3:15pm in room 1035. Please come and learn how you can be a part of what promises to be an outstanding production.

Auditions for The Little Mermaid will be held September 12-14th in the Loft Stage.

Students are invited to an audition workshop on Friday, September 9th, immediately following the first LoftPAC meeting of the year.

Students should sign-up for a time to do a dance call (September 13th or 14th) as well as a singing/acting audition time (September 12th or 14th). Veteran Lofties are asked to sign-up early in the week if at all possible.

At the dance call, students will rehearse a short combo and audition in small groups. Not all parts require dance but dancers are encouraged to audition no matter their vocal ability. Please dress in comfortable clothes and shoes. No boots or flip-flops!

At the vocal/acting audition, students will be asked to either perform a song of their choice (minimum 32 bars) or we will teach a selection from the show for the audition. We recommend selecting a song in the Disney songbook or in the same genre. There is nothing to prepare for the acting audition. Come ready and willing to go under the sea!

What: Participating Spotlight schools are invited to send their technicians to this first ever Technicians Masterclass led by our Union department heads at The Orpheum Theatre. The Masterclass is free of cost to Spotlight schools but space is limited so sign up today.

Workshop Descriptions. Students will attend 3 workshops through their session based on preferences and availability.

Tour with Dave Marietta, Engineer and Theatre Operations Manager for the Orpheum

• Explore the Orpheum and discuss what management goes into making a touring show operate in a theatre like ours.

Electrician

• A hands on experiences hanging and focusing lights on the Orpheum stage, see what it takes to light up a stage of this size.

Spot Operator

• Head on up to the Spot booth and learn about the equipment and test your steady hand at focusing and following.

Sound Designer

• Learn what it takes to build and design a professional show. Take your turn at the board and test your ear.

Lead Carpenter

• Understand what it takes to be a part of a much larger team, hear stories, and band together for a hands on experience of hanging legs.

Fly Systems

• Take the climb to learn about the inner workings of the gulley. Learn what it takes to master and handle the rail, from below, or above.

We have a rare and limited opportunity to offer a Dance Masterclass led by cast members from Newsies. This class will take place on February 11th at the Cowles Center. This is open to any of our Spotlight kids but is available on a first come, first serve basis. I would encourage you to think about reaching out to a few of your featured dancers and even your male dancers that you want to develop or you think would benefit and enjoy this experience. A variety of technical levels will be accommodated. There is a $5 fee per dancer for the class. As always, if cost is an issue just let us know and we can provide scholarships if need be. To start out each school will be limited to 10 students. If there are available spots we will reach back out. Students should sign up individually so feel free to share the link for their registration with your students reminding them that space is limited!

Along with this amazing opportunity we have access to a few education-priced tickets. These tickets are $52 and include pizza following the masterclass. With the entire run practically sold out, this is a great opportunity. When you register for the masterclass please check the box if you would like to also attend the show and we will get that purchase information to you. Students attending the workshop will have first crack at the show tickets. If we have any available we will open them up to non-workshop attendees. Keep in mind that we have more space in the workshop than we do tickets for the show so registering quickly is critical. I wish that we could accommodate everyone but Disney runs a pretty tight ship.
