One Act Play: Pride & Prejudice Auditions

Synopsis:
This isn’t your grandmother’s Austen! Bold, surprising, boisterous, and timely, this P&P for a new era explores the absurdities and thrills of finding your perfect (or imperfect) match in life. The outspoken Lizzy Bennet is determined to never marry, despite mounting pressure from society. But can she resist love, especially when that vaguely handsome, mildly amusing, and impossibly aggravating Mr. Darcy keeps popping up at every turn?! Literature’s greatest tale of latent love has never felt so theatrical, or so full of life than it does in this effervescent adaptation. Because what turns us into greater fools…than the high-stakes game of love?

Auditions:
Auditions for Pride and Prejudice will be December 3rd and 4th 3:15-6:00 (with the potential of ending earlier). Auditions will be held in the Black Box.

You may be asked to read multiple sides both at auditions and at callbacks. If you would like to prepare, please take a look at the following sections.

Audition Sides:

SIDE 2: The Long’s Ball

In auditions, we are looking for actors who are specific and bold with their character choices. Your character choices should show what makes the character unique while still being part of the team.

Roles:

JANE: Late 20s-Early 30s. The eldest Bennet daughter. Kind, idealistic, diffident. Always tries to do the right thing

MISS DE BOURGH: Lady Catherine’s daughter; a gremlin. Probably allergic to the sun. Underneath all her veils, she may be covered in scales. 

LIZZY: A year or two younger than Jane. Clever, spirited; can be sharp-tongued.  Prides herself on good judgement. Very very scared of marriage, after absorbing the lesson of her parent’s marriage. 

LYDIA: 14. The youngest Bennet. Lively prone to imitating others’ behavior and eavesdropping. 

LADY CATHERINE: Patrician Caesar-meet-drill-sergeant. An older rich aristocrat and she knows it. 

MR DARCY: Late 20s-30s. One of the richest men in England. Too proper for his own good; awkward in most social contexts. Prides himself on self-control and good judgement. 

MR COLLINS: A pedantic, obtuse man. The original mansplainer. Rector to Lady Catherine

WICKHAM: An unfairly charming gentleman. Probably a sociopath. Raised with Darcy. 

MR BINGLEY: Late 20s-30s. Lovely the world and the world loves him. Darcy’s best friend. 

MARY: The third Bennet girl. Prone to sulking. A dark gothic character. Coughs to get attention, or to make a point; may fancy that she is dying.

CHARLOTTE LUCAS: Same age as Lizzy. A practical girl with a good sense of humor. 

MR BENNET: The patriarch of the Bennet family. Finds amusement in absurdity; often looks for respectable escape from his family. Can be somewhat apathetic; probably a bit depressed, under everything. Enjoys antagonizing. Disappointed in marriage. 

MRS BENNET: The matriarch of the Bennet family. Mostly a silly woman, of mean understanding and variable temper. The business of her life is to get her daughters married.

Callbacks:

Callbacks will be Dec 5th from 3:15 – 6:00pm. The first read thru will be Dec 8th at 3:15pm. Standard rehearsals will begin Dec 9th and the schedule is on the rehearsal calendar.
